Derecognized 44 Deemed Universities In India…

The University Grant Commission or UGC, is the legal organization in India set up by government to look after the determination, maintenance and coordination of standards of university education in the country. The statutory body has the power of giving ranks to universities and colleges and to recognize or de-recognize institutes of higher education as per their performance. The institution has head-quarter in New Delhi, with regional centres in Pune, Kolkata, Bhopal, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

On Jan 2010, Ministry of HRD, India has de-recognized 44 Deemed University because of the major irregularities found in their educational system and put them under scan. As per the Tondon Committee report these educational centres were functioning in contravention of the UGC Act in different parts of the country like Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar etc.

The Review Committee found several aberrations like undesirable management architecture where families rather than professional academics controlled the functioning of institutions. Moreover most of these recognized universities were offering post-graduate and undergraduate courses that are fragmented with concocted nomenclatures and seats disproportionately that increased beyond the actual intake capacity.

The list of 44 Deemed Universities that Review Committee has de-recognized are:

  • Graphic Era University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand
  • Christ College, Bangalore
